[ what really happened? ]

‘It’s one of the strongest catastrophes that has happened in Spain in the last hundred years’

What is a DANA, the meteorological phenomen that caused the torrential rains that have left thousands dead in Southern and Eastern of Spain?

The term DANA began to be used by Spanish meteorologists a few decades ago to differentiate it from the more generic ‘cold drop’, which is usually used to refer to any situation of intense and abundant rain, especially when it occurs on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula during Autumn

A DANA is a phenomenon in which a mass of very cold polar air is isolated and begins to circulate at very high altitudes (between 5,000 and 9,000 metres), far from the influence of atmospheric circulation

Then, when it collides with the warmer and more humid air that is usually present in the Mediterranean Sea, it generates strong storms, especially in late summer and early autumn, when sea temperatures are at their highest

‘It creates an intensely unstable environment, and that’s where the air rises. It very quickly allows the storm clouds to really fly, aided and abetted by the winds hitting higher ground and also rising. And the higher the storm clouds are, the more moisture there is in them’, explained BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor

[ how can I help? ]

If you’re in Valencia or would like to travel to help, we’ll show you what they really need right now

Food & Drinks

> Water and energy drinks
> Non-perishable food
> Pre-cooked food
> Milk and juices

There is no drinking water or electricity. The affected areas remain without essential supplies as of today, so perishable foods or even pulses, cereals and any food that requires cooking or similar will be of little help

Medicines

> Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Multivitamins…
> Intimate hygiene
> Face masks
> Water purification tablets
> Asthma and special care products
> Baby products

Given the victims, animals and dirt from the sea and river, the affected areas are decomposing and the smell is toxic

Vehicles

> Building products
> Materials and tools
> Vans and trucks
> Thermal blankets
> Solar lamps
> Matches, batteries and lanterns

Trucks, vans and all vehicles are needed to transport food, medicines and all goods, as well as building materials from different parts of Spain

You can join to our volunteering programme to help Valencia

You will be with a team of volunteer workers, medical and-psychological care team and people who, like you, want to do their part

Our mission in this circumstance is to raise 30 million euros to help improve and rebuild their homes and lives. Valencians have lost everything; their families, their friends, their progress, their homes, their vehicles. We need urgent help and that can only be thanks to your donation

The money raised is already being used to buy medicines and essentials, but we need you to reach our goal: 30 million euros

If 1 person donate 1 euro is not enough, but if 30 million people donating 1 euro = target reached

Sometimes things are a little simpler; you just have to put it in a different perspective
